LifeLine Shelter for Families,Inc. is a 501(c)3 charitable agency that assists GPISD students and their families who are homeless. LifeLine places them in local apartments, while our caseworkers help them to stabilize their circumstances. They maintain their own housing independently following the 1 - 3 month program. LifeLine also intervenes to prevent eviction of families who have had a crisis that made them unable to pay rent, and have no place to go. Our clients are not chronically homeless; but are briefly in such a crisis. The majority are working, and have the potential to overcome their traumatic brush with homelessness through a helping hand and hard work. Help from LifeLine means the children can remain in their own supportive community and schools, without the distressing experience of going to large out of town homeless shelters, or "couch surfing" from place to place, or doubling/tripling up with friends or relatives until the welcome wears out. The community shows support for the homeless students by providing clothes, shoes, grooming products, haircuts, school supplies, Christmas gifts, and more. Since beginning in 2003, LifeLine has sheltered 2,387 students from 926 families. Almost 88%,of all ethnicities, have been headed by mothers struggling to provide for their children alone. LifeLine expects to serve a minimum of an additional 150 families this year. Contributions mean more can be helped.
