Who Are We?
Heritage Abbotsford Society operates Trethewey House Heritage Site on a fee for service from the City of Abbotsford. The society is a registered Non-Profit Society which depends on grants, private donations and fund-raising efforts to provide its services to the people of Abbotsford. With the jewel in Abbotsford's crown, Mill Lake Park, as a back drop, the society provides a wide variety of heritage focused programs and events for visitors of all ages. Trethewey House is a Craftsman style bungalow, built in 1919 for B.C. timber baron J.O. Trethewey and his family. The house has been restored to c.1925 and is furnished with donations from a number of local families. Let us take you around the house and tell you about Abbotsford's history, the many pieces on display, and the families that donated them, while you take in the ambiance of 1920s Craftsman architecture in all its glory. Also on site is the Upper Sumas BC Electric Railway Station, an original 1910 station on the BC Electric Railway Chilliwack Line, as well as a one room pioneer classroom, and our Heritage Gallery, built in 2000. The Heritage Gallery houses our local history exhibit, where you get to find out about what this site looked like before the arrival of the first European settlers, and during the Abbotsford Timber & Trading heyday, who worked here, who lived here, and how that impacts us today. The Society acts as the Memory of the Community by -Preserving a Collection of artifacts representing Abbotsford's history and the heritage of the area. -Presenting the Collection in a way that engages and challenges the community on issues of culture and heritage -Promoting the Trethewey House Heritage Site and other cultural sites in Abbotsford -Preparing the next generation for the future by teaching them about their past
